Dr Richard Harris is a Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who is dual qualified in both Medicine and Dentistry. He works privately with Intraface Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and publicly as a Consultant Trauma Surgeon at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH).

Specialist Training and Academic Credentials

In addition to his Specialist surgical training, Dr Harris earned a PhD in Bone Biology and Biomechanics at the Surgical and Orthopaedic Research Laboratories at UNSW in Sydney, where he also lectured in Anatomy at the School of Medicine. He continues his research interests and was appointed Chair of the RACDS OMS research committee and currently supervises PhD students.

After gaining his dental degree at the University of Sydney and his medical degree at the University of Queensland, Dr Harris completed his medical residency at the RBWH, then worked as a registrar in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Gold Coast University Hospital. He then entered advanced surgical training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, with posts at RBWH, Princess Alexandra, Gold Coast University and Logan Hospitals.

Facial Trauma

Dr Harris is a facial trauma Consultant Surgeon, and runs the trauma clinic at the RBWH, one of Australia’s largest and busiest trauma centres.

Dr Harris is a faculty member of the AO (Association of Osteosynthesis) Asia-Pacific Cranio-Maxillo-Facial division involved in training surgeons and developing concepts in trauma management. He is also part of the RBWH Orbital and Skull tumour team, working with Neurosurgeons, Ophthalmologists and Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeons in the management of spheno-orbital cases.

Sports Medicine

Dr Harris holds a Graduate Diploma in Sports Medicine and is affiliated with various Sporting teams. He serves as a Team Physician for the US Ski Team’s Alpine World Cup athletes when they travel to the Southern Hemisphere. He is also a qualified Ski Instructor with the New Zealand Snowsport Instructors Alliance and has long been involved in alpine ski racing.
